Biased Adaptive Modulation/Coding to Provide VoIP QoS over HSDPA

چکیده
The High-speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) of the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) provides a flexible and efficient packet transmission platform, and has been attracting operators to integrate a diverging variety of services. We studied the possibilities of delivering conversational speech traffic in the form of voice over IP (VoIP), over HSDPA. To provide the VoIP QoS typified by severe delay requirements, the adaptive modulation/coding of HSDPA is biased to achieve lower error rates, thereby reducing the number of hybrid-ARQ retransmissions and the transfer delay. Each radio frame is transmitted either with a higher power or using a lower rate modulation/coding scheme, depending on the available power at NodeB. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme effectively improves VoIP QoS consuming a trifle of extra power, and substantially increases the system capacity. The results show that VoIP deliveries over HSDPA is feasible.

This paper investigates packet-scheduling aspects for satellite UMTS downlink transmissions in two special cases: High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (MBMS). In particular, this paper surveys resource allocation constraints to be considered for HSDPA via satellite and investigates the applicability of Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) in conj...

In this paper, we present an adaptive architecture for the transport of VoIP traffic over heterogeneous wired/wireless Internet environments. This architecture uses a VoIP gateway associated with an 802.11e QoS enhanced access point (QAP) to transcode voice flows before their transmissions over the wireless channel. The instantaneous bit rate is determined by a control mechanism based on the es...

Third generation (3G) packet switched WCDMA networks with high-speed downlink packet access (HSPDA) are currently being deployed worldwide to provide wireless broadband connectivity. When introducing HSDPA in 3G networks the end user experience and system capacity with voice over IP applications improve considerably. When later on adding also high-speed packet uplink access (HSUPA), the system ...

Quality of Service (QoS) control is an important issue in Voice over IP (VoIP) applications because of the need to meet technical and commercial requirements. The main objective of this paper is to propose a new QoS control scheme that combines the strengths of adaptive rate and speech priority marking QoS control techniques to provide a superior QoS control performance, in terms of perceived s...
